New Computer!
So you know how every year, the news shows a bunch of complete idiots standing outside a store all night before Black Friday? This year I was one of those idiots.
I arrived at Best Buy at 10:30 PM, and was #14 in line. It rained steadily until 4:00 AM, and I didn't get home till past 9:00 AM. But by golly I got myself a fancy-shmancy new computer I could never have afforded otherwise for $189. Celeron D, 3.33 Ghz, the first computer I've bought new... well, ever. Not the most amazing system available this season, but it's still a couple steps ahead of my usual upgrade path. (My previous system had been designed to handle nothing more advanced than a Pentium II, though I had a hacked P4 equivalent crammed into it.)
Waiting for a Wii would probably have given me more street cred, but I'm still happy.

Holidailies Intro
Holidailies is here once again! It's that magical time of year when slacker journallers around the world begin posting again for a month before lapsing back into sporadic updates.
As is my wont, I'm going to kick things off with an update on who I am and where I'm at.- Me: I'm Shmuel. I'm 33, though I rarely admit it. I'm into English, pop culture, and research.
- My journal: You're reading it. It has a cheerful bright yellow background. If you prefer not being blinded by the light, there are also links in the sidebar to the RSS and LiveJournal feeds. (Just be sure to leave comments on my site, not on LJ.)
- Grad school: I'm done with it. I got my second master's, and I'm happy to not have to worry about classes and professors and such anymore.
- Employment: I work full-time at an almanac, doing research and factchecking and editing and writing. Except for the bit where I need to be there first thing in the morning, this is pretty much my dream job.
- Student loans: Ugh. Don't ask.
- Medication: Still working on the ideal mix of SSRIs. Currently I'm on Celexa and Wellbutrin, which has cut my anxety waaay down, but which has also left me unenergetic of late. Upping the Wellbutrin dose only made me jumpier without helping me function better; I'm hoping to ease off on the Celexa a bit.
- Social Life: Exists almost exclusively on Second Life these days. Which is rather a shame, not that SL isn't fun. Though I'm planning to have a Festivus party again sometime in January.
- Romantic Life: Exists exclusively on Second Life these days. Which is rather a shame, not that SL isn't fun.
- Family Life: It's been almost five years since I stopped talking to my father, and it remains one of the best decisions I've made in my life, despite complicating my ability to spend time with my siblings.
- Living Conditions: I live alone, in an apartment that's almost too big for one person, allowing room for lots of bookcases. Plus I got a full-sized refrigerator since last year. I love my apartment.
