7:34 PM:
A blizzard of short, unrelated comments:
- Some of you have been wondering about the little "link" thingy at the end of each entry. Its sole purpose is to provide an address for every individual entry, so that others can link to it, if they so desire. I suppose it could also be used to bookmark an entry, should you find one so inspiring that you want to be able to refer to it regularly. If you're not linking or bookmarking stuff, you can just ignore it.
- The Supreme Court's recent decision that Casey Martin has the right to use a golf cart in the PGA Tour must rank as one of its dumbest decisions ever. (The only question is whether this is entirely the Court's fault, or if it was, in fact, ruling in accordance with a really dumb law.) It's not the Court's place to decide which rules of a given sport are essential, and which can be tossed aside to accommodate players with disabilities. The full decision is worth the download (it's in PDF format) just to read Scalia's dissenting opinion, which is exactly, perfectly on target.
- Kristin has already said what I want to say about the Kaycee Nicole affair, so I'll just link to her entry. The second half of it ("So why do I care?" onwards) is the relevant bit.
And lo, the sun descends; time for me to get offline. Have a nice weekend!
6:07 AM:
There's not much to report, really. It hasn't been a very productive week; Monday and Tuesday were knocked out for religious reasons, and my internal clock is still wildly erratic, so that I'm not up at very good hours, and I'm never entirely awake when I am up.
There's time for matters to settle down, at least. I've got most of June ahead of me to dispose of as I wish. Not that I don't still have some things to be done during that time, but for most intents and purposes, the next few weeks are my vacation, and I'm darn well going to try to take it easy while I can.
But (sigh) here's this month's to-do list:
Mopping Up and Planning Ahead
- Finish the provocative language essays already.
(Ideally by graduation; preferably no later than a week beyond that.)
- Sketch out as much of this summer's basic plotline for my camp newsletter as possible.
Medical Matters
- See my doctor for the annual physical and booster shot, so I can submit the appropriate form to the camp authorities. (I've gotten away with not doing this some years, in defiance of my contract, but I'd rather not push my luck.)
- While I'm there, see if he has any advice for this fungus thing affecting my smallest right toenail that the 3WA gang diagnosed for me awhile back. (If he doesn't, wait another year or so until I start teaching in Michigan, at which point I get health benefits and may be able to see a podiatrist.)
- Okay, that was probably Too Much Information for you guys. Sorry.
- See my ocular plastic surgeon (hoping that my insurance claim has gone through) and find out what we're gonna be doing. Which may be complicated by this whole moving-to-Michigan thing.
- (Getting a second opinion from a dermatologist or two should be on this list, but who has time?)
Entertainment
- Go to the Bronx Zoo, for the first time in many years. Admission's free on Wednesdays.
- See a film or two. Shrek is the frontrunner on the wanna-see list just now.
- I really wanna go to a karaoke bar, but only if I'm with somebody else.
Finances
- Borrow a ton of money from my brother, who just got his tax refund, and pass it along to my new landlord in Michigan.
- Get my own tax refund in time to pay the rent to my current landlord. I hope.
- Look forward to my summer job, so I can pay everybody back and get enough for the remaining rent here and the first month's worth there.
- Without much room to spare, but what else is new?
To sleep
- Perchance, to dream.
- Whether 'tis nobler in the mind's eye to suffer the slings and arrows of untimely consciousness...
2:41 AM:
My e-mail is on the fritz again. And as is its wont, all of my accounts have picked the same time to go kablooey, so I can't even provide an address guaranteed to be stable.
The nycmail.com address found all over this site is having trouble because mail.com is currently overhauling its service. Apparently, lots of mail there is bouncing, although some of it's been getting through.
My primary account in general... well, I'd thought it worked, and I've been getting mail on it, but at least one message to it bounced with a fatal error, and I now suspect it wasn't alone.
The mailbox my nycmail.com address actually forwards all its mail to seems to be doing okay, but a bunch of the aliases that are supposed to work for it stopped working a couple of weeks ago. The evidence strongly suggests that this is because somebody administering my account changed the settings and screwed it up. I called tech support, and they promised to fix it by the end of the day, but they failed to do so. I haven't had the chance to pursue the matter again since. That, however, is the least of the current problems.
The upshot of this is that if you've sent me mail and it's bounced, either try another of my addresses, or wait a couple of days and try again. Thanks.

7:52 PM:
And so we arrive at another Jewish holiday, this time Shavous. Starts in a few minutes, ends Tuesday evening, so I'll be offline for the next two days.
