I've got two eyes, and they're both the same size! |
Saturday, October 23, 1999 Eyelashes and Other Irritations Looks like I'll be going to the eye doctor tomorrow after all. Come to think of it, did I tell you what happened last time I went to the ocular plastic surgeon guy about a month ago? I don't think I did. In a nutshell, then, he started by noting that two of the few eyelahes remaining on my left eye were, in fact, rubbing against my eye, which was a Very Bad Thing. So he yanked them out. Actually, that was the guy before the ocular plastic surgeon himself. I think. There are two dudes who have dealt with me, both times I've been there, and I'm not quite clear on exactly what the division of labor is. As near as I can tell, the first one checks out how I'm doing, takes care of the basic stuff, and then sends me off to the main guy. Anyway, he yanked out the two eyelashes in question. The main guy then informed me that my eyelid was healing really well, and that I might not end up needing any plastic surgery at all, from a medical standpoint. He shrugged off the possibility of my wanting it from a cosmetic standpoint, on grounds that I was a male, and, therefore, that wouldn't really matter. Anyway, he told me to come back in six weeks, to let the swelling go down further. That'll be on November 1st. In the meantime, my eye got pretty irritated a couple of weeks ago, and stayed that way for awhile. I finally called my regular eye doctor last Monday, making an appointment for tomorrow (Sunday), as that was the first chance I had that fit both our schedules. Naturally, my eye began feeling better immediately after that. Today, it wasn't bothering me at all, so I'd more or less decided by this evening to cancel the appointment, on grounds that it was presumably okay now, and that, as such, my time would be better spent studying for my midterms. But then I looked in the mirror, and suddenly noted that I had one -- no, two -- eyelashes growing a bit left of the center of that eye, away from the cluster of lashes on the right that had, I thought, been all that remained. "Hey, cool," I thought. "I still have a couple of lashes there!" Then, "Hey, I wonder if--" Then, "Oh, shoot." Near as I can tell, at least one of them is quite definitely rubbing against my eye at times. Actually, it looks more as if it's skimming its surface, but that's quite enough. Comparisons with my other eye confirm that they ain't supposed to be doing that. So I guess I know what the problem is. It's almost tempting to just try yanking it out myself, but I'm not quite that stupid. So it looks like I'm going to the eye doctor tomorrow after all. Naturally, since I noticed this, my eye's been feeling irritated again. Hmmmph. Maybe ignorance was bliss after all.
In other news, the use of "midterms" above was correct; it is, indeed, plural. While I'd planned to take my Indian History midterm on Friday, instead of Monday, it didn't work out that way. I tried preparing for it on Thursday night, getting only partway through the ground I had to cover before falling asleep for a few hours. I then woke up feeling more than a little zonked, and not in especially good condition for an exam even if I had been prepared, which I wasn't. So I called the History Department and told 'em I'd take it on Monday, with the rest of the class. Methinks Monday is going to be a bloodbath for Yours Truly. But, on the bright side, after Monday, it'll be all over. At least for the next little while, anyway. Also on the bright side, after packing it in on Indian History, I wrote the prospectus for my Theories of Feminism term paper and my column for the college paper. So I'll be able to focus on the midterms from here.
Still on the bright side, I spent most of Shabbos sleeping, which I desperately needed. Times like this, I realize how glad I am there's one day a week when I couldn't do anything even if I wanted to. I'd probably never cut myself any slack otherwise...
In another area of inactivity, I haven't been doing much proofreading for Clean Sheets lately. Sometimes I think the only reason they keep me around is that I'm good at kibitzing on their internal mailing list. I can see the line on my resume now: Abilities: Gives good kibitz. Think that'll interest any employers?
