Ambassadorship and Other Ramblings

I got a letter in the mail today identifying me as a prospective Queens College Ambassador, and inviting me to a meeting a couple of weeks from now, where I can find out how I can become a member. Here's the sales pitch:

Ambassadors have been providing a valuable service to the college community since 1990. They have been involved in such activities as Presidential and Vice Presidential receptions, campus tours, homecoming festivities, dedication ceremonies and many more. Along with the recognition you will receive as a member of the Ambassadors, you will also enjoy the convenience of early registration each semester. This privilege is reserved for active Ambassadors only.
There are two decent reasons to join, I suppose. It would presumably look good on my record, and the pre-registration thing sounds nice. The latter isn't as much of a factor as it might have been in the past; as a lower senior next semester, I'll be almost at the top of the list for registration anyway. But the one thing that it presumably would help with would be for getting into the courses outside of my major that get grabbed by all the majors in that subject before registration in general begins. I am particularly thinking of art courses here. I wouldn't mind taking another art course or two in my final couple of semesters.

That's the plus side. On the minus side, I have more than enough commitments already without adding another one to the list. Between my classes, my column for the college paper (for which I submitted the semester's first installment today), my proofreading and writing for Clean Sheets, my work for the English Department, my work for the American Studies Program (which I'm way behind on), and my helping out with the English Club's literary journal, not to even mention this online diary... I think I have quite enough to do, thank you very much.

Aside from which, I get the impression that the Ambassadors are basically supposed to get out there and deal with people. Which is hardly my strong point, being both an introvert, and the fastest talker around since the "Micro Machines" commercials went off the air. So, all things considered, I figure that I might check out the meeting, but there's almost no chance that I'll actually join.

Still, it was nice to be asked.

Over in Geology lab, we've been given a bunch of minerals, with the mission of figuring out just which minerals they are. One of the identifying characteristics used to do so is hardness: by seeing what can or can't scratch or be scratched by a given mineral, you can figure out roughly how hard it is.

One of the substances generally used for this testing is one's fingernail.

This can be rather difficult if you're a chronic nail-biter, as I am.

But I've been managing, I guess...

I can't afford to get my own domain name at this point. That's nothing new, and is the reason why I'm on Internet Trash in the first place. Not that there's much wrong with this provider; I've been quite happy with the service I've had here in the past year or so, and am very glad that I chose it, instead of the other options I'd considered at the time. And, hey, it's free.

With that having been said, I have felt for some time that I'd like to get my own domain someday, once I start making real money and can afford to do so. Which will probably be years down the line, and who knows what the 'Net will be like at that point, but still. It's a goal.

And I have, for some time, had a first choice of domain name. Every few weeks, I would double-check to make sure that it was still available. And it always was, and I would breathe a sigh of relief.

Until today.

Somebody else got Shmuel.org. Dammit.

Oh, well. I knew it wouldn't wait forever. Too many Shmuels out there. (Yes, really. In my neck of the woods, every Tom, Dick, and Harry is named Shmuel. So to speak.)

Sigh.

So I'm reading the paper, and I find out that Rosie O'Donnell is going to be called as a contestant's "lifeline" on Sunday's episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? This comes after the announcement, the other week, that somebody was going to win over a million bucks on Twenty-One, which in turn came after similar announcements about upcoming episodes of the other shows.

I don't get it. Part of the fun of game shows is that you don't know what's going to happen next; you don't know if the contestant is going to blow a question along the way or not. Doesn't leaking details in advance spoil that part of it?

Finally... raise your voice in joyous song and proclaim it from the rooftops: Georgina is back! And there are lots of new entries on her site, so start reading!
